Hand-Embroidered Interpretation By: Honduras Threads Artisans
To make the cards, Honduras Threads artisans hand-embroider a swatch of fabric then gluedthe fabric to paper made of recycled coconut fiber. The paper is made by Inversiones Ecologicas in Tegucigalpa.
The artisans live in five different rural communities outside Tegucigalpa. Artisans' work allows them to earn money so they are not forced to leave the country in search of jobs. It enables them to feed and educate their children and to purchase critical medications. All proceeds from the sale of cards go directly to the artisans.
Honduras Threads, a non-profit, teaches the artisans how to deepen their skills so they can design more items like these cards. In addition to design, it teaches embroidery and sewing techniques and business processes. It provides fabric, some donated from homes in the U.S. It markets the products the artisans make.
